Vaccinations

Many of the diseases that affect dogs and cats are preventable through proper vaccinations. Vaccination stimulates your pets immune system, teaching it to recognise and fight important infectious diseases. Some of these diseases can be very difficult to treat – prevention is better than cure! Vaccination provides the best way of reducing the risks that these diseases pose. We will advise on the diseases your dog can be protected against through vaccination, such as Distemper, Canine Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Leptospirosis, Canine Cough and Rabies. Cats can be protected against respiratory and cat ‘flu viruses (feline rhinotracheitis virus, feline calicivirus and Chlamydophila felis) feline panleukopenia virus and feline leukemia virus (FeLV).

Dentistry

Oral health is very important to your pet’s general health and comfort levels. If you’ve noticed bad breath, discolouration of your pet’s teeth, broken teeth or things just don’t seem right then it’s important to get your pet’s teeth checked. It could be as simple as tartar build-up requiring some cleaning, or it may be more serious. We regularly see pets with advanced periodontal disease which is a medical condition that can cause infection to spread throughout your pet’s body. Our vet has completed additional training in veterinary dentistry and we have invested in top of the range dental equipment to provide the best care to our patients.

Parasite Control

We stock a wide range of wormers and flea and tick tablets and spot-on treatments. We can advise you on the best product for your pets based on their risk profile. Fleas can infest your pet from a very young age and at any time of the year. A single female flea can produce up to 50 eggs per day which will fall off your pet into your home and develop over the following weeks! Adult fleas bite dogs and cats causing itching and irritation and they can bite humans too! Ticks are a growing threat. Your pet can be exposed to ticks on walks, in public parks, woodland, grassland or farmland. These blood-sucking parasites are a serious health risk and can transmit diseases such as Lyme Disease to pets and people. There are a number of different worms that can infest dogs and cats, including roundworm, hookworm, lungworm and tapeworm. Although they may not be visible, dogs are commonly infected with worms. The roundworm, Toxocara canis, can affect humans too and children are most at risk if eggs are accidentally ingested. Regular worming treatment of your pet will help to protect both your pet and your family too.

Diet & Nutrition

Good quality food is important for all pets. Excellent nutrition lays the building blocks of good health for later life. Puppy and kitten diets are specially formulated to contain correct nutrients in the right balance to promote growth. There are lots of different brands and types of food available. Dry food is better than tinned food for your puppy in the long term so start as you intend to continue! Dry food helps to maintain healthy teeth and it is more concentrated so it is better value in the long run. Cats typically prefer a mix of wet and dry food. We stock Calibra pet food which is excellent quality and value and has been really popular with our clients and their pets. There is a wide range of diets suitable for puppies and kittens, adults and older pets, as well as sensitive diets, weight control food and many more. We have a full range of prescription diets also for a variety of conditions such as kidney disease, liver disease, etc.

End of life care

We understand how difficult it can be to say goodbye to your lifelong companion. We ensure a peaceful passing for your pet when the time comes. We understand that you may want to stay with your pet to the very end, or you may find it easier to leave after they slip into a gentle sedated state. We respect each individual owner’s preferences and we provide a gentle touch and a soothing voice to your beloved pet as they slip away peacefully. We work with an Irish company that provide pet cremation and special memorials to remember your pet by (www.pawprintscremation.ie)

Microchipping

Microchipping is an extremely reliable way of identifying your pet and reuniting you with them if they are lost or stolen. New legislation was introduced in Ireland in 2015 requiring all dogs to be microchipped and registered on an approved database. Cats may also be microchipped. The microchip is the size of a grain of rice which is implanted under the skin at the back of the neck. The microchip remains there for life and when scanned it produces a unique identification number. This number, when entered into a secure database, is registered to your phone number and address so you can be contacted if your pet is found. Don’t forget to update your details if you move house or change phone number. Make sure to change the ownership details with the microchipping company when you get a new pet!
